The Pinnacles




Around seven million years ago, the Aorangi Range was an island. As the mountains eroded, scree and gravel were washed down to the coast, where they formed a sedimentary layer. Over the past 120,000 years, the Putangirua Stream has exposed this ancient layer of gravel to the erosive forces of rain and floods. Some of the sediments stayed concreted together, while others washed away. The result is the Putangirua Pinnacles 'an amazing collection of hoodoos'.

This outlandish place was used as a filming location for the 'Paths of the Dead' scene in the Return of the King, the third movie in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy.

To find the Putangirua Pinnacles Scenic Reserve, drive about 13 kilometres along Cape Palliser Road from the Lake Ferry turn-off. The reserve has a camping ground and a choice of walking tracks. Three of the walks lead to the pinnacles. you need to allow about three hours for the round trip.

    Hi Raul. Enjoy man padi. Kaya lang narapak si rubber shoes ko ta bakong pang-hiking. Napakit si irirarom. Mayo man kaya akong dara-darang sapatos na arog kaito. There were two paths to choose from: One was an uphill hike to a look-out point where you can have a panoramic view of the places; the other was a ground level walk where at the farthest end you can be up close to the land formations. We opted for the second one. Medyo hindi nakaka-pagod pero ther path was rocky (matatarum pati). And we had to cross a river a few times. Walang tulay, just rocks to hop on. At times we had to put the rocks on the river ourselves para may matatapakan. It was also very tiring but enjoyable nonetheless. I won't mind repeating it (basta with the right footwear na, hehehehe...)

    Why don't you plan a trip here, so you can visit "Middle Earth." :-)

Rating: ★★ Category: Movies Genre: Action & Adventure I've been watching out for this movie since I first saw it as a trailer for one of the movies I saw recently. I just thought that my longing for a great martial arts movie minus the spectacular location shootings and the cast of thousands that usually attend many of the recent films in this genre, e.g. Hero, and House of Dagger of Jet Lee, and without the zany humor that are the mainstay of Jackie Chan movies, would be a little refreshing if not a little nostalgic for the Kung Fu films of the great Bruce Lee. I am happy to note that indeed there were no spectacular scenery shots, and the story and action very serious indeed. Of course, how else can a portrait of an assassin be presented but seriously. Three-Days-Two-Nights at Pearl Farm. The Davao Pearl Farm is a sea side beach front resort located in an island called Samal which is just about 45-minutes motorised boat ride from Davao City. See http://www.pearlfarmbeachresort-davao.com/ppc/ . One can take a plane from Manila to Davao City and take a cab directly to the Pearl Farm jump-off point and main front office. It could take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes (depending on the time of day and traffic situation) from the airport towards the direction of the Waterfront Hotel (formerly the Insular Hotel) to the marina where Pearl Farm Resort exclusive boats/ferries carry visitors across to Samal island with four trips (8AM, 1.30PM, 4PM and 6PM).
