The Ghost Writer
Rating: | ★★★★ |
Category: | Movies |
Genre: | Mystery & Suspense |
Starring: Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall, Olivia Williams
Synopsis:
A writer has been tasked with completing the memoirs of a former UK prime minister. As he digs into the life of his subject, he discovers sensitive secrets that soon put his life in danger.
My Take:
Okay, after a long excursion to fantasy land and wallowing in the technological magic of CGI with movies like Avatar, Clash of Titans, Last Airbender, Toy Story, and even Inception, to name a few, I'm slowly creeping back to realism via the movies like Salt. And now The Ghost Writer, a mystery suspense-thriller directed by the ever controversial Roman Polanski.
Although this is not a spy movie, The Ghost Writer carries all the elements of one, i.e. anytime there is deceit and the CIA is involved, it is always a spy movie. Of course, it's not the kind of thriller that the Bourne series is well known for. There are no adrenalin-filled car chases and such. But the elements of a genuine mystery, suspense and thriller are all there, including a very intriguing ending. It is also very realistic in the sense that it seems to portray current events and you'd suspect that well-known public political figures are actually what the story is all about. It's so realistic you could mistake it as semi-documentary or an inside story presentation of current events. Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan are great here. And as for Kim Cattrall, it's quite refreshing to see her doing these types of roles after seeing her waste her acting talents in the Sex in the City series and movies.
So, if you're looking for an old fashioned movie devoid of CGI and camera trickery, and one in which the story rather than the way the movie is made is the major selling point, The Ghost Writer is the movie for you.
By the way, this will appeal to both the husband and the wife (unless the husband or they wife for that matter has seen it all). For those who prefer pure adrenalin non-stop action, explosions, automatic-fire weapons, etc. plus an array of action superstars, and not necessarily the story, I'd recommend The Expendables. It's easy on the brain.
It's showing now in Makati - Glorietta 4 and Greenbelt 3 cinemas.
ReplyDeleteHere's a trailer:
ReplyDeletewell, Ewan, Pierce and Kim (ahaha..first name basis pa kami ha) are talented actors...am sure ganito na story would all the more shine with them in the lead roles
ReplyDeleteowww...i like pierce, di ko muna babasahin review mo, panoorin ko muna...grabe ka tochie, araw araw yata nasa sinehan ka, hehe
ReplyDeleteWhen I first came to the US, people would look at me quizzingly if I used the word "trailer" when talking about movies. "Preview" is still the commonly used term here, although more people understand the word "trailer" now, too.
ReplyDeleteI read this in a chatroom where they were talking about the difference between the two terms:
"In many cases it seems that the preview/trailer is just the movie with the boring parts removed. Perhaps they could come out with DVDs with just previews and save us all the fast-forwarding."
(^_^)
Sounds like a good deal to me.
ReplyDeleteooh, sounds like its better than inception. until now, i haven't brought myself to watching my solo movie escapade, and this sounds easier to digest than inception...
ReplyDeletei have mixed emotions about salt, i still don't know if i want to watch it or not.
Hahaha, nice. First name-basis ka pala with them. Okay yan with Kim and Pierce. But with Ewan, ewan.
ReplyDeleteMay discount kasi as part of an on-going credit card promo, hehehehe... Lalo pa siguro pag qualified na ako sa senior citizen discount (ilang weeks na lang yun - something like 114 weeks). Kasi pati yung merienda ko magkakaroon din ng discount, hehehehe...
ReplyDeleteYes, Peachy. Ang alam ko, diyan sa inyo, when one says trailer, it's in reference to a mobile home. Well, trailer and preview are usually used interchangeably now. And I agree, there are previews or trailers that practically show/tell the story. This is very common here lalo na sa mga local (tagalog) movies.
ReplyDeleteDito kasi, many movie-goers do not really go for the story. They watch them to see their favorite movie stars. Kaya kahit ulit-ulitin, okay lang. The story-line does not usually vary anyway, i.e. api sa simula yung bidang babae (or lalaki), the contrabida is a son or daughter of a rich family, then in the end, the roles are reversed - taga-pagmana pala ng malaking kayamanan yung bida, tapos yung contrabida ay ampon lang pala. Panahon pa nina Susan Roces in the 50s ganyan na. Ganyan pa rin ngayon.
Garantisado yan, Peachy
ReplyDeleteInception is of a different genre. Both are worth watching, though. One is not necessarily better than the other.
ReplyDeleteSalt is easier to digest (pun intended). But Salt (Jolie) is an acquired taste (pun intended again), hehehe...
ha ha, you and your punny jokes! [fun intended, lol!]
ReplyDeleteBy the way, someone who saw the movie, "The Expendables" noted that there were explosions or some form of it every two minutes. Exaggerated I'm sure, but that's the impression it made on the viewer. As I said, it is easy on the brain. You can probably leave your brain at home and need not worry whether you'll understand the movie or not.
ReplyDeletehow come i did not see this movie sa cinemas? well, i only go to Shangrila, Promenade or Rockwell kasi..i want to watch this one...and yes, thanks to the credit card, i had more chances of watching movies kasi sayang naman the opportunity of watching it for free..
ReplyDeleteaccording to my son -- expendables was awesome! talagang action...pero the story line kinda sucked...his words not mine ha.
I'm not sure why it wasn't shown in many theaters. Siguro yung local distributor ay mahina sa promotions.
ReplyDeleteTip on the card promo: If your bill is P3,000.00 or more, try to request that your bill be cut or divided into two, i.e. P1,500.00 each. Kasi for every P1.5k entitled ka na sa movie discount.
