Ninja Assassin

Rating:★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Action & Adventure
I've been watching out for this movie since I first saw it as a trailer for one of the movies I saw recently. I just thought that my longing for a great martial arts movie minus the spectacular location shootings and the cast of thousands that usually attend many of the recent films in this genre, e.g. Hero, and House of Dagger of Jet Lee, and without the zany humor that are the mainstay of Jackie Chan movies, would be a little refreshing if not a little nostalgic for the Kung Fu films of the great Bruce Lee.

I am happy to note that indeed there were no spectacular scenery shots, and the story and action very serious indeed. Of course, how else can a portrait of an assassin be presented but seriously. But in so far as action ala Bruce Lee was concerned, it didn't quite measure up.

If there is one word though that will always be used to describe this movie is Gory. It seems that all the wounds inflicted in all the fight scenes (for both the bad guys and the good guys) are all in their major arteries as the blood spurting out of their bodies are indeed more bountiful than your average garden fountain.

But while the spurting blood and gore are the movie's main "attraction," I am happy to note that it does not even begin to approximate the blood-and-gore-experience in another Hollywood movie which utilized martial arts, and where the sharp, shiny Samurai blades were extensively used - Kill Bill - where even the severed body parts could be seem spurting blood.

To enjoy or just simply appreciate this movie, you must know what you're getting into, i.e. a lot of sharp blade cutting flesh and gratuitous amount of blood splattered all over. I consider this movie the Kung Fu equivalent of the Rambo series. i.e. one guy against all (but instead of Rambo's heavy firepower, the weapons of choice here are an array of impressive ancient Ninja weapons, including ninja swords, ninja throwing stars, and ninja knives connected to ninja chains).

You don't really have to bother about the story itself. Once you see all these weapons employed in the raging fight sequences, that's when the fun really begins.

The pace of the action in the fight sequences is also cleverly handled by making most of the fights occur either in the night time or partly in the shadows so you don't really notice if there were lapses in the choreography.

The Korean movie star Rain seems to me a quite able action star that could be further built-up as a possible new Bruce Lee. He has the type of ribbed abs that Bruce Lee had, and a little more time in the gym could have the desired effect. The only problem I have with Rain is his name. First of all is that he has no family name and I think Rain somehow does not fit the macho image of a great Kung Fu fighter. Secondly, his boy-next-door image in the Korean tele-novelas which are famous all over Asia keeps interfering with the "Rambo-image" that he is being molded into.

But I would say that since the days of Bruce Lee, there has never been a film that comes close to the fight scenes of movies such as Enter the Dragon and The Big Boss as this Rain starrer - The Ninja Assassin. I actually thought that Jackie Chan films were going to be like that but recently his fight scenes are looking more like the same excerpts from a dance sequence (that's why he has to make those zany scenes and keep on changing locations to hide the monotony, perhaps).

If you are like me who terribly misses the good old Kung Fu movies, this one will be a good fix. But if blood and gore is not your type, or you have strong opinion against bloody video games, you may have to skip this one. NOTE: If you can sit for almost two hours watching the new Twilight movie, New Moon, you can probably survive Ninja Assassin.

Here a synopsis from Wikipedia:
- Raizo (Rain) is one of the world's deadliest assassins, having been orphaned as a child and raised by the Ozunu Clan, believed by the world to be a myth. When the love of his life is executed by the Clan for betrayal, Raizo begins to harbor resentment towards the Clan. When his first official mission is completed, he is told to execute one of his fellow members for the same reason his lover died. He rebels against them, nearly dying in the process, and goes into hiding, seeking revenge on his former Clan. Meanwhile, Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris) is a Europol agent who investigates money linked to political murders and finds that it is linked to the Ozunu Clan. She defies her superior, Ryan Maslow (Ben Miles), and retrieves secret agency files to find out more. The clan, finding out about the investigation, attempts to assassinate her, but she is rescued by Raizo. Hiding in Berlin, Raizo and Mika must find a way to take down the Ozunu Clan. Permanently. -

  1. hi Tochie, you must have read my mind...earlier today I was dithering between watching New Moon and Ninja Assassin or even both. I was telling myself - sayang di nag post si Chito ng review of the latter (well, parang its a stretch of imagination for you to watch the Twilight saga.

But I had read prior reviews of NA and I couldn't help also but be a bit skeptical...I enjoyed Kill Bill very much...but I thought this movie now may have lots of action but would not be the fully baked cake version.

Anyway, I did watch NM earlier (might as well see if it really dragged out, because probably for those who read the book, the film was more in keeping with how it was written). I was tempted to watch NA since I felt sleepy..and I only remembered that I had some other errands (more productive than spending my money and flattening my already flat butt inside the theater).

So there, di ko na rin to papanoorin unless nasa cable tv sya..hahaha! antayin ko na lang...

  2. I will watch this movie. Saw New Moon to see what the blockbuster is all about. And I said: Wtf?! Women are getting dumber and dumber?

  3. oist..ang target market nito ay mga teens po..di yan pang "Love Story" category na movie...

I've read the 4 books and even the one halted by SM due to it being leaked (point of view of Edward during the Twilight story), inantok rin ako...its not my favorite book of the series, but I have to say in fairness, it tried to deal with all that SM wrote in her book with some small liberties lang...understandable when its a bit difficult to put all of it in the film.

  4. I understand what the swooning is all about. Immortal, true love lives. And tension in between. You have to admit, mababaw ang story, plot, and you really have stupid lines. "What the girl wants...what the girl gets".
My reaction is probably in the same category as reacting to why TV lunch shows are rating so high.

  5. ay..and don't forget ...adding to the brouhaha is the Camp Edward versus Camp Jacob....

o di kilig to the bones mga tweenies :-)

as for me..I admit (medyo shamefaced)...I watched it today because my mini-reunion at Abe's the other day had one of my batchmates saying one word - "abs"....mwahaha!

    what can I say..ever since "300".....

  6. If "abs" the thing that draws them to the movie, I'd really really recommend that they watch Rain in Ninja Assassin.

  7. Yes, Cat. You're one of the few girls I know who would have loved Kill Bill. Your taste for anime, I believe, also makes you an ideal fan of this martial arts movie. I really thought NA was the kind of movie you'll go for.

As for me, as long as it is Kung Fu, okay na. And anything about ninja is also okay with me. I've always been mystified by the secrecy of these legendary fighters in much the same way as I am with the so-called Shaolin (fighters) monks. The only qualification I'll make though is that it must be portrayed by an oriental, e.g. Japanese, Chinese, Korean. Kung Fu and ninja movies portrayed by caucasians, e.g. Grasshopper David Carradine actually make me laugh. Pero puede na si Steven Segal (nung payat pa sya).

  8. If it's action you want, Hugz, it's action you'll get. Uma-atikabo!

  9. I think you're really referring to the Bella Swan character. Teenage swooning does not really involve analysis, Hugz :-). Let them swoon naman, hehehe...

    ReplyDelete
  10. Paminsan- minsan naman Hugz, let's give our brain a break, hahahaha... Wowwowiieeeee!!!!

  11. shempre ano pa *wink*

ah..teka..one clarification...when they were in their "manly" form of course...

    ReplyDelete
  12. am afraid di sila mahilig sa action, at gusto nila may romansa..meron ba din non sa NA?

    ReplyDelete
  13. actually NA was more tempting to me...and I have always had a fondness for mga karate, kung-fu, martial arts, ninja movies etc. since panahon pa ng betamax - my dad and I used to pick out these kinds of movies para every week may flying kicks, black-masked assassins and bald monks on the screen...hahaha!

It was a bit iffy for me watching some Caucasian looking guy in a martial arts movie...pero I think I was able to watch American Ninja (parang si something..Dudikoff? ang starring) without retching naman...

Nadaanan ko na yung mga Jacky Chan movies (in his early days), yung mga ninja versus Shaolin movies etc. ...and all this was way way back pa from yung Once Upon a Time ni Jet Li..hay nako...pwede na akong iwan sa bahay at bahala na silang lumabas lahat kapag may stash ako ng beta tapes na ganon...

Earlier films ni Steven Seagal ok nga naman..pero di na masyadong exciting after a while eh...even yung kay Van Damme...mas gusto ko setting yung olden times kc parang authentic na authentic...

if playing pa sa GB1 this weekend, baka daan ako to see NA..or baka manood ako sa dbd..hehe...ok naman screen ko sa bahay..pwede pa akong magmulti-task..

  14. have your girls ever swooned during their teen years Tochie?

    ReplyDelete
  15. at alam na natin if nanonood ba si Tochie or hindi...

  16. If it's abs they're after, action or no action would not be an issue. Pero siempre gusto nila yung pa-cute pa ang dating, di katulad sa NA na shady yung personality ng bida. Yan talaga ang problema sa mga girls, puro katawan lang ng boys ang nakikita!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sorry to disappoint you Cat. No such thing as "my girls" during my teens. When I speak of girls swooning, I refer to girls I know who were swooning over my classmates who were either athletes or academic contest bets. I don't know of any girl who would swoon over a "sacristan" like me.

    ReplyDelete
  18. e shempre, di mo makikita ang brain ng boys...

sabagay..I can say the same for men in general...kaya yung mga mags na Penthouse and Playboy mabenta *wink*

    ReplyDelete
  19. ibig kong sabihin mga daughters mo Tochie hahaha!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I knew you'd spring that trap, Cat. So I just played along. Anyway, I don't believe my girls (my daughters) are into swooning. If there's anything about my daughters that comes close to that word, it is "swimming." They like swimming a lot, hehehe...

  21. Hindi na rin daw ma-benta yang mga mags na yan ngayon sa mga guys. Actually, the newest thing that's getting more popular are the adult films/magazines catering exclusively for women. Some are even predicting that this is the future of the adult film industry.

  22. I have not yet seen this movie Chito. I am not a fan of Rain. But when it comes to martial arts, there is only one Bruce Lee.It is really bad that he did not get to see his success in Enter The Dragon.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi Joey. Thanks for dropping by.

Rain is really more of a matinée idol here in Asia. I first saw him in a teenage romantic comedy made in Korea which is shown here in the Philippines as one of the many so-called Korea-nobelas. He has quite a following here as well as in other Asian countries. Something of a phenomenon, in fact. When I was in Bangkok a few years back, I found that he's even more popular in Thailand. Since I am not really into daytime soaps, I don't really follow him that much. Besides, I think these teenage romance TV dramas are really way beyond my interest.

Like you, I also consider Bruce Lee as one-of-a-kind and that many who tried to copy him were utter failures. But since the issue of Cat and her friends were focused on the "abs" stuff, I thought that the movie, Ninja, may catch their interest (nevermind the story). But for me, I thought this film gets me closer to the real thing, i.e. martial arts of the Bruce Lee type as against the martial arts that's more like dance that Jackie Chan and Jet Lee are now recently dishing out. The most recent Jet Lee movie I saw which was quite disappointing was The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon.

But I found Ninja a refreshing take on this whole martial arts thing. If you have the chance, try to catch this movie.

One more thing, if you are a fan of Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman, Ninja is like a very modern remake of his movies.

  24. argh..why didn't you say so? natuwa ako nong movie na yon no...shoot ..san na deebeedee ko non..hmm...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Rain left a bad taste in people's mouth here because he reneged on his contract on a concert that is supposed to be held here. He was sued and lost.

I will try and catch his movie, Ninja, sometime. Myra and I like watching a movie every weekend or if there is a really good one. btw, I already saw 2012 twice. I was even mesmerized when I saw it the second time because this time, we watched it in a much bigger theater where the sound system is THX. I remember mentioning in your review that the critics here said it was not good or something to that effect. It is always in the eyes of the beholder. With me, I usually don't believe what the critics say. I always want to see it myself before I lay judgement on it. We watch movies to be entertained and we did enjoy almost every movie we watched.
