2012

If it's spectacular entertainment you're after, this movie delivers!

With the Himalayas, the highest point on the planet with peaks in excess of 23,000 feet, swallowed in a giant tsunami, it could not get any more spectacular. You will also see familiar landmarks such as the US White House, The Vatican and the giant Cross of the Resurrection in Rio de Janeiro, toppled down like a house of cards and crushed to pieces. And if the spectacular does not quite catch your attention, the thrill and suspense definitely will. It is somewhat a combination of what you'll feel in the movies "Twister" and "The Titanic," and the car-chase sequences of the "Bourne Identity" series.

While 2012 may be dismissed as just another end-of-the-world movie, this one apparently is based on a common prediction as foretold in several civilizations including the ancient Mayan history (Mayans are known as the "keepers of time"), the oral legends of the Hopi Indians, the Chinese I-Ching, and even the Christian Bible itself as narrated in the Book of Revelation. Apart from these "historical " prophesies, this story is given some sense of scientific legitimacy as it is based on a scientifically projected galactic alignment of a number of heavenly bodies including the planet Earth in the year 2012.

It truly is a spectacular, thrilling and adrenalin-pumping movie with matching nail-biting, heart-stopping suspense. I barely noticed that I was tightly clutching the theater arm-chair with my hand with wife's hand on it! Oh by the way, don't worry about spoilers about the story or plot because it really does not have much. It tells of a story of...oh, never mind, just prepare to be awed and overwhelmed by the Sensurround sound and the stunning cinematography. Of course it's CGI. But how else do you do a location shooting when you want to show a view of the entire Himalayas mountain system being engulfed in a gigantic tsunami?

Oh, by the way, here's a tip: Should the end of the world be really imminent, be sure to have at least one billion Euros. Because that's how much it will cost you (according to the movie) to get a seat on the modern Noah's Ark which will be built and launched in China (that's assuming you can get a Chinese visa).

  3. Maybe the end of earth civilization is the start of moon colonization. May promo ba yang moon hotel na yan? Kung may mabalita-an ka, paki-pasa naman ng tip.

  6. Oh no, no, no. Kung sa small screen mo lang ito papanoorin, walang kuwenta. It has to be seen/watched on the big screen to be enjoyed. Besides, iba ang dagundong ng Sensurround. Talagang matatag-tag ang dibdib mo!

  8. Hi Joey. Thanks for dropping by. Yes, I've read some of the reviews. The movie didn't really make much of a positive impact on the critics. I guess it's because they were concerned more about the scientific "inaccuracies," even referring to them as psuedo-science. Some have also pointed out that the so-called Mayan calendar which purportedly points to a specific date when Time will terminate has been so badly mis-interpreted. But that's what they've also said about the movie, "Da Vinci Code."

Other critics have also focused on the excessive or extensive use of computer generated images (CGI) which, they say, all the more makes for a very unrealistic cinematographic effect, i.e. while the entire planet is being ravaged by a gigantic tsunami, the sky seemed to look like one on a bright sunny day!

I also personally think that the story or the plot itself is really really so implausible, i.e. the White House Chief of Staff gets to command Air Force One and eventually the "survival pod" without as much as a hoot from the military top brass.

Like the critics, I could go on and point out some more nonsensical tidbits. But as I mentioned right from the very start, the movie delivers on its promise, i.e. spectacular entertainment. And that's good enough for me :-).

Sabi nga ni Hugz, it's the adrenalin rush that rules rather than the logic of analysis.

If you have time, go and see for yourself, pare.

By the way, you'll also have a glimpse of what happens to Hawaii when the destabilized magma deep under the Earth's crust starts displacing the tectonic plates in the Pacific ocean.
